Teachers' Blog Teachers' Blog

Linked with the webinars organised for the project teachers, this blog will display teachers thoughts, plans, ideas and experience with tablets in classroom. After each webinar, the teachers will write a reflective post on the given topic. Along the course of the project, this blog will provide an interesting insight into day to day teaching with tablets.

Introducing Erhard Schwarzl from Jennersdorf/Austria

Hello, my name is Erhard Schwarzl based in Jennersdorf, Austria.
I am the class teacher of one of the first "iPad trial classes" in Austria.
In my class there are 21 pupils (aged 13/14) and each of them got an iPad by the "Federal Ministry for Education" in September 2011.
So we have already used iPads in several subjects for three years regularly.

In the first year the major aims were ..

  • to get acquainted with tablet computers
  • to find Apps that are useful in lessons
  • to use Apps in various sequences
    e.g. Music - Symphonie, Garageband ...
           English - Card2Brain, iTranslate, ...
Geography - Maps, Google Earth, Papierflieger, Mindmeister, ..

In the second year we expanded the usage of Apps in all subjects. However, there was a special focus on Apps in Geography.
During the whole school year various Apps were used and evaluated. The result was a handout with useful and practicable Apps in Geography for all teachers in Austria.

In the third year there was a special focus on Music/Garageband.
We established an "iPad Orchestra" with about 12 pupils. It was amazing for the pupils to perform popular songs at various events.

What I'd like to achieve from the CCL-project
I'd like to find out how other schools in Europe use tablet computers in teaching and learning. What kind of methods are used to work with tablets.
It will be interesting to hear about the expierences made by others.

Biggest challenge
How to get a reliable feedback of the benefits using tablets in school.

Are tablets appropriate devices to make learning and teaching more "lively"?
What are the benefits of using tablets in school exactly?
