Does the use of touch screen computer technology improve classroom engagement in children?

The University of the West of Scotland investigated the use of tablet computers, specifically Apple's iPad, in an upper primary school setting with regard to children's engagement. The study was conducted in the Cedars School of Excellence in Greenock, Scotland, a private school that has deployed a one iPad per child scheme prior to data being collected. All the students had been using iPads in the classroom for approximately 7 months before the study took place. Two classrooms were used for observations which were composite classes of primary 4-5 and 6-7 (aged 8-11 years old).
